Franklin TGA-470 works great

We used it in China and Japan on recent trips and while it does not speak it worked just great.
Most words and phrases we needed were in the thing and moderately easy to find. The key is to search for one word of a phrase. |
Looks like a little book

So far is seems pretty good. Easy to use, many features and many languages. I bought it particularly because it had Japanese, Korean, and German, but it has many more. Like all of these things the vocab is small and that is annoying, but for basic use it does the trick.
ohh yeah, and it looks like a little book! (this gained it 1/2 star, otherwise it might have been a three for lack of vocabulary) |
Works better than the more expensive one.

This unit works OK, very helpful at least when it is light enough to read it.
I wish it had phonetic pronounciation tips, this would be especially useful with Slavic languages.
I find this unit easier to use than the 450 model. It is not as easy to slip in a pocket, though. |
Language translator

Most hand held languge translators provide an insuffcient vocabulary.
This device is no exception. It is only a very slight step above the
less expensive TWE-100 by Franklin. It does offer seven additional languages and all have skimpy vocabularies. |
This translator sucks

I think this translator sucks, you can not enter a sentence to be translated .. only single words work best and then it gives you a few options of translations for that certain word . For 100 dollars i would have expected more, along with the word availability is very limited, which means many words are not in it.
i bought this so when i travel to China, it was little help
